Sri Lanka’s only standing hope in the event of Badminton, Sachin Dias and Buwaneka Goonethillake made their way to the quarterfinals in the Men’s Doubles event at the 2018 Asian Games.

Sachin and Buwaneka, the young power duo who re-wrote history for Sri Lanka Badminton at this year’s Commonwealth Games, have managed to be the only two shuttlers to advance in the Asian Games. Focusing only on the Men’s Doubles, the duo have registered two wins so far to reach the round of 8.

In their round of 16 match, the Lankans were faced with Rizwan Azham and Sulehri Kashif from Pakistan. Goonethillake and Dias made easy work in under 25 minutes, in a cracking clash. The final score of the straight set victory read 21/12, 21/13.

Previously, Dias and Goonethillake made it through to the pre-quarter finals with a magnificent straight victory in their Round of 32 match. Their victims, PN Che and PF Pui from Macau China, faced a 21/11, 21/8 smashing against the Lankan duo.

Meanwhile, Dinuka Karunaratne lost his stance in the Asian Games with a pre-quarterfinal defeat to Ka Long Angus in straight sets. Karunaratne held his own against the 9th World Ranker from Hong Kong, but eventually lost out 21/6, 21/14.

In the Women’s Singles, Kavidi Sirimannage of Sri Lanka saw end to her stint in Indonesia as she went down to Nitchaon Jindapol who is currently ranked 11th in the world. Jindapol finished off the match 21/4, 21/14 in just over 20 minutes, sending the last Lankan woman in the circuit packing.

The lone wolves, Sachin Dias and Buwaneka Goonethillake will feature in their quarterfinal match tomorrow, 26th August, against this years Men’s Doubles World Champions from China, Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen.

The match will kick off at 1:00pm SL Time.
