Photo Album – 41st National Sports Festival – Final Day
Vinoj Suranjaya and Rumeshika Rathnayake were crowned the fastest man and woman of Sri Lanka respectively as Western Province bagged the Athletic Championship with 13 gold medals at the 41st National Sports Festival, at the Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium.
Suranjaya, who on second day took home the 200m title with a new meet record clocked a time of 10.45 secs on his way to defeating one of the favourites, Himasha Eashan from Western Province. Incidentally this was also a new meet record; the previous best was by Chinthaka De Soysa with a timing of 10.47 secs way back in 1998.
Rumeshika, who too won the 200m the previous day continued her excellent form to win the 100m with a timing of 11.88 secs.
Earlier in the day National record holder Manjula Kumara from Southern Province fell 0.04m short of breaking his own meet record of 2.23m which he set in 2012.
Manjula and N.C.D.Priyadarshani of Western Province who set a long jump National Record of 6.43m on day two were awarded the Best Athlete award for Men and Women respectively.
In the women’s 4x400m relay, Southern Province comprising of G.N.Madushika, T.A.Abeyrathne, Eranga Dulakshi and Nimali Liyanarachchi set a new meet record of 3.43.98 mins bettering the previous best of 3.45.21 mins by the North Western Province in 2011.
Nadeeka Lakmali eclipsed her own meet record of 57.89m from two years ago with a distance of 58.52m in the women’s Javelin Throw.
