St. Benedict’s College beat De Mazenod College on first innings at home in Kotahena. Speedster Geethal Fernando produced a five wicket haul for Benedicts, which included four wickets in four consecutive balls.
Winning the toss and bowling De Mazenod could only restrict Benedicts to a reasonable 236 all out in 81 overs. Geethika Jayathilake top scored for Benedicts with 62 and Mahel Jayalath scored a fighting 43. Akash Senarathne stared with the ball as he picked up 7/67 for De Mazenod College.
Batting in their first innings De Mazenod was bowled out for just 91 runs in 21 overs. Benedicts speedster Geethal Fernando made a rare feat as he picked up four wickets in four balls for Benedicts. The right arm paceman picked up the wickets of Akash Senaratne (caught at slips), Sachin Sittamage (bowled), Lasith Croospulle (bowled) and Malshan Fernando (LBW) as he left De Mazenod in shambles at 17 for 6 at stumps on day 1.
Continuing on day 2 they (Mazenod) could have only added another 74 runs as they were bowled out for their first innings. Rishan Sanjula top scored for Mazenod with 52 runs.
Following on they managed 262 for 9 as Akash Senarathna and Rishan Sanjula of De Mazenod denied St.Benedict a probable outright victory when the pair helped Mazenod after following on force a draw conceding just first innings points to St.Benedict. Akash Senarathna not only excelled with the bat scoring a match saving 74 but also captured seven wickets of Benedict’s only innings in the match. Geethal Fernando and Geethika Jayathilake bagged 6 wickets between them.
