Moratu Maha Vidyalaya secured a 3-wicket win over Sri Sumangala College, Panadura to clinch the 30th Battle of the Golds Limited Overs Cricket Encounter which was played today (30th April) at De Soysa Stadium in Moratuwa.

After asking to bat first, Sri Sumangala College hasn’t got the start they would’ve been hoping for, losing the first six wickets with only 63 runs on the board. Out of their top six, only two batters have reached the two-figure mark. However, their no.7 and no.8 pair were looked to rebuild the innings by putting a fifty partnership for the 7th wicket as Senira Lithmin got out after making a useful contribution of 55-ball 35.

Imalka Fernando was their chief run-scorer as he made 43 off 72 before being run out courtesy of Malith Rupasinghe’s brilliance in the field and Sri Sumangala were eventually bowled out for 152 in the 47th over. Kavishka Oshan was brilliant with his medium pace by picking up 4 wickets for just 34 runs while skipper Sukitha Dewthilina was sensational too as he scalped 3/27 in his 10 overs including a maiden.
With only 152 on the board, Sri Sumangala bowlers had nothing given away easily for Moralians as they reduced the opposition to 42 for 5. At the score of 73, Vidusha Peiris trapped Shehara Fernando in front of the stumps for 20 as Moratu Maha Vidyalaya lost their 6th wicket. Thereafter, skipper Sukitha Dewthilina and Hashen Isuru has taken the game away from Sri Sumangala by adding a much-needed partnership of 62 runs for the 7th wicket as Hashen Isuru was dismissed for 25.

That breakthrough looked like, too little too late for Sri Sumangala as the Moralian skipper held his nerve by taking his side to victory, making an unbeaten 45 off 101 balls. Vishwa Lahiru bowled such an economical spell of 3/16 in 10 overs while Duranka Silva bagged 2/25, but that wasn’t enough when defending a below-par total as Moratu Maha Vidyalaya reached the target after losing 7 wickets with 14 balls to spare.
