Sri Lanka’s T20I Asia Cup Squad: New Faces, Big Returns & Tough Battles

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has unveiled a formidable 16-member squad for the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025, set to take place in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28, 2025.

Led by the dynamic Charith Asalanka, the squad blends seasoned campaigners with in-form players, aiming to reclaim Sri Lanka’s dominance in the T20 format.

With a challenging Group A featuring Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong, the Lions are gearing up for a fierce battle to secure a spot in the Super Four round.

The 16-member squad largely mirrors the lineup announced for the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, with two notable exceptions: young opener Vishen Halambage and leg-spinning all-rounder Dushan Hemantha have been excluded.

Halambage, who earned his maiden T20I call-up for the Zimbabwe series, and Hemantha, who was drafted in to replace the injured Wanindu Hasaranga, miss out as selectors prioritize experience for the high-stakes tournament.

The biggest boost for Sri Lanka is the return of star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who missed the Zimbabwe T20Is due to a hamstring injury sustained during the ODI series against Bangladesh in July 2025. Hasaranga, a linchpin with his wrist-spin and explosive batting, is included in the squad, but his participation remains subject to fitness clearance closer to the tournament.

The ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025, hosted in the UAE, will see Sri Lanka compete in Group A alongside Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong in the first round. The tournament, running from September 9 to 28, features a round-robin group stage, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Super Four, followed by the final.
