Sri Lanka’s Record at the Commonwealth Games Rugby 7’s

Rugby 7’s was first introduced to the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in 1998 and has been a part of this multi sport event since then. The Sri Lanka Men’s 7’s team has participated in all editions of the Commonwealth Rugby 7’s tournament. Below is a brief look back at how the Tuskers have performed at this event.

1998 – Kuala Lampur, Malaysia

In the Inaugural tournament Sri Lanka were grouped with New Zealand and Malaysia in the 1st stage of the group phase and along with Australia and Papua New Guinea in the 2nd stage of the group phase. The Tuskers’ campaign ended with a loss to Papua New Guinea in the Plate Quarter Finals.

  • Lost to New Zealand : 80 – 00
  • Lost to Malaysia : 35 -26

Group Stage – 2nd phase

  • Lost to Australia : 70 -05
  • Lost to Papua New Guinea : 47 – 00

Plate Quarter Finals

  • Lost to Papua New Guinea : 47 – 05
  • Sri Lanka was placed in 14th position from among the 18 participating countries.

Medalist: New Zealand won the first Gold medal in Commonwealth Games 7’s Rugby with Fiji claiming Silver and Australia taking the Bronze medal.

2002 – Manchester, England

The 2nd edition of the CWG Rugby 7’s tournament saw Sri Lanka face South Africa, Tonga and Wales in the group stage while the last match was in the Bowl quarter finals against Scotland.

Group Stage

  • Lost to South Africa : 82 – 00
  • Lost to Tonga : 47 -12
  • Lost to Wales : 55 – 07

Bowl Quarter Finals

Lost to Scotland 57 – 00

Sri Lanka was placed in joint 13th position (with the other 3 losing Bowl Quarter Finalists) from among the 16 participating countries.

Medalist: New Zealand retained the Gold medal they won at the first Commonwealth Games 7’s tournament with Fiji once again claiming Silver and South Africa settling for Bronze.

2006 – Melbourne, Australia

The Tuskers faced Australia, England and Cook Islands in the group stage and bowed out of the event in the Bowl quarters after facing Uganda.

  • Lost to Australia : 73 – 00
  • Lost to England : 61 -00
  • Lost to Cook Islands : 47 – 00

Bowl Quarter Finals

Lost to Uganda : 24 – 12

Sri Lanka was placed in joint 13th position (with the other 3 losing Bowl Quarter Finalists) from among the 16 participating countries.

Medalist: New Zealand made it a hat-rick of Gold medals at the Commonwealth Games Rugby 7’s with England taking Silver and Fiji claiming Bronze.

2010 – Delhi, India

In the Group Stage Sri Lanka came up against Australia, England and Uganda while the final game was against Papua New Guinea in the Bowl quarters.

  • Lost to England : 59 -07
  • Lost to Uganda : 35 – 05

Bowl Quarter Finals

Lost to Papua New Guinea 26 – 12

Sri Lanka was placed in joint 13th position (with the other 3 losing Bowl Quarter Finalists) from among the 16 participating countries.

Medalist:  New Zealand won the Gold medal once again to make it 4 in a row at the Commonwealth Games Rugby 7’s with Australia and South Africa claiming Silver & Bronze respectively.

2014 – Glasgow, Scotland

The Tuskers recorded their first win in CWG Rugby 7’s as they claimed the Shield Trophy that was introduced for the first time. After encountering Australia, England and Uganda in the group stage, Sri Lanka met Papua New Guinea in the Bowl Quarter Finals. The Shield Trophy was annexed after overcoming Barbados and Trinidad.

Lost to Papua New Guinea : 17 – 12

Shield Semi Finals

Beat Barbados : 34 – 00

Beat Trinidad & Tobago : 43 – 07

Sri Lanka was placed in 13th position amongst the 16 participating countries as a result of winning the Shield trophy.

Medalist:  South Africa broke New Zealand’s dominance in CWG 7’s rugby by winning the Gold medal for the first time. New Zealand had to settle for Silver this time with Australia taking the Bronze medal.

2018 – Gold Coast, Australia

In this edition of the games Sri Lanka took on Fiji, Wales and Uganda in the group stage. The Tuskers campaign ended in the group phase as they lost all their games, with only the teams that topped their respective group qualifying to play off for the medals while the 2nd placed teams in the group vied for the 5th to 8th place positions.

  • Lost to Fiji : 63 – 05
  • Lost to Wales : 42- 12
  • Lost to Uganda : 33 -12

Sri Lanka was placed in joint 13th position (with the other 3 teams that were placed at the bottom of their respective groups) from among the 16 participating countries.

Medalist:  New Zealand regained the Gold medal, with Fiji picking up the Silver and England annexing the Bronze medal.

2022 – Birmingham, England

Sri Lanka will once again participate at the 2022 Commonwealth Games having gained qualification from the Asian region along with Malaysia. The Tuskers have been grouped with New Zealand, England and Samoa in the preliminary round.

Women’s Sevens

Women’s 7’s rugby was introduced for the first time at the last games in Golden State, Australia with New Zealand winning the inaugural gold medal while Australia and England picked up the Silver and Bronze medals respectively.
