Sri Lanka vs Hong Kong

The Sri Lanka Women’s Rugby team had a disastrous first day at the 2nd leg of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series 2019 in China. Losing to both China and Malaysia, the Lady Tuskers failed to continue their decent tun of performances from the 1st leg.

Starting off their run in the 2nd leg, Sri Lanka showed signs of urgency from the first minute in their opening game against front-runners Hong Kong, as the local Ladies scored the first try. Anusha Atthanayake broke through the defense line and went straight under the posts as Sri Lanka led 7 points to nil.

But, as half time approached Hong Kong managed to level the scores and keep momentum on their side.

As the 2nd half began, Hong Kong dominated the game and scored three tries whilst preventing Sri Lanka from adding any points to their total. Although the Lady Tuskers fought back, it was not enough to overcome Hong Kong’s challenge

FT: SL lost 7 – 22 HK

Sri Lanka vs Malaysia

What could have been an easy win for Sri Lanka, slipped through their hands as the Malaysian Women shocked the Tuskers with a brilliant performance and secured a convincing victory.

Sri Lanka who ran riot against Malaysia in the 1st leg in Korea, after winning the game 35 – 5, came into the game with the same intention of scoring more points and boosting the ladies’ morale.

But, the outcome of the game was completely the opposite. As nothing went Sri Lanka’s way, the Malaysian Women who exerted tremendous pressure and starved Sri Lanka of the ball, pounced on every opportunity that came their way.

Anusha Atthanayake scored the only try for Sri Lanka, but it was a little too late. Malaysia had already sealed the deal as Sri Lanka concluded their run on the 1st day at the bottom of the group.

FT: SL lost 5 – 20 Mal

Sri Lanka will play their final group stage match tomorrow against China at 7.52 a.m.
