Windies skipper Stefanie Taylor decided to bat first in the final Group (A) fixture as both teams were eager to make it through the semi-finals of the WT20. The Windies once against showed why they are still world champions by clobbering the Lankan bowlers to all parts of the ground. Opening batsmen Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin went at 12 runs per over in the power play overs as the Windies rose to 72 runs effortlessly. Matthews was the more dominant out of the two batsmen bring up a 25 ball 50. The Lankans dropped a well settled Matthews at 50 as she made them pay for it in ruthless fashion. Matthews was dismissed shortly after for 62 accumulating 8 fours and 2 massive sixes.

Taylor takes career-best 4/12 as Windies charm home fans

Dottin joined by skipper Taylor did not let the Lankan bowlers settle, as Dottin took over the reins from Matthews. Dottin fell one short of fifty as the Windies were cruising at 132 by the end of 13th over. Even though the Lankan fielding was pretty ordinary they were able to pull off two brilliant runouts in the field, which may have been a bit too late given the situation of the match. Taylor helped the Windies post a mammoth 187 for the loss of five wickets in their allocated 20 overs.

Chasing a target of 188 was not easy. If there was someone who could bring glory to Sri Lanka it was up to Chamari Attapattu, recalling her brilliant 176 against Australia over a year back at the ICC Women’s World Cup in England. Attapattu was the sole contributor for the Lankans but her 44 runs off 35 balls did not prove to be enough as the rest of the Lankan batsmen felt prey to some brilliant bowling led by Hayley Matthews. Sri Lanka lost their last six wickets within a span of less than five overs as the Windies wrapped a famous 84 run victory in the 18th over.

Hayley Matthews was named the player of the match for her brilliant allround skills. With that England and West Indies qualify from Group (A) to the semi-finals.
