Sri Lanka Women to play first bilateral series in Australia

The Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket Team will leave for the island on the 22nd of September for a full-blooded tour in Australia which will be included of 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is.

The ODI leg of the tour which will form part of the 2017–2020 ICC Women’s Championship, will be held in Brisbane while the T20Is are scheduled to be played in Sydney.  Sri Lanka are already out of contention for automatic qualification for the 2021 Cricket World Cup through the 2017–20 ICC Women’s Championship as they have only won 1 WODI out of 15.

This will be Sri Lanka’s first tour to Australia apart from the visit down under for the 2009 Women’s World Cup. The tour will be a great platform for the Sri Lanka Women to get a feel for the Australian conditions just 5 months ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia.

The Sri Lanka squad consists of 15 players and 5 standbys too. The ODI squad will be led by the experienced campaigner Shashikala Siriwardene while the T20I squad will be guided by opening batter Chamari Atapattu.

Speaking at the press briefing held to announce the tour, ODI skipper Shashikala Siriwardene said, “We have Dilani Manodara, Udeshika Prabodhini and myself who played in Australian conditions last time when we participated in the 2009 World Cup. So, that experience will be valuable for the squad and we are hoping to put up a good fight against Australia”

Chamari Atapattu, the skipper of the T20I squad stated, “This is a young squad and we are preparing for the 2020 T20 World Cup which will also be hosted by Australia. Upcoming series will be a golden opportunity for the squad to get used to the conditions there.”

Sri Lanka’s last international series was against England at home where they lost both the ODI and T20I legs 3-0. Their past ODI record vs Australia reads as 8-0 in favour of the Aussies and T20Is, 2-0.
