The West Indies U19 team kicked off their seven-match Youth ODI series against Sri Lanka U19 with a hard-fought 12-run victory in the opening game at Coolidge Cricket Grounds on August 30, 2025.

After winning the toss, West Indies U19 elected to bat first on a surface that promised runs but demanded discipline. The decision paid dividends as they posted a competitive 256 runs in their allotted 50 overs.

The innings was anchored by a classy half-century from Jonathan van Lange, who scored a well-crafted 83 runs off 94 balls, including 6 fours and a solitary six. His composed knock provided the backbone for the hosts’ total, with valuable contributions from the middle order ensuring a challenging target.

Sri Lanka U19’s wrist-spinner Vigneshwaran Akash was the standout bowler, delivering a disciplined spell of 4 wickets for 33 runs in his 10 overs. His guile and control troubled the West Indian batters, keeping the scoring in check during crucial phases of the innings.

In reply, Sri Lanka U19 fought valiantly but fell short at 244 runs. The chase was dominated by Kavija Gamage, who played a breathtaking knock of 123 runs off 104 balls, smashing 14 fours and 3 sixes. His aggressive century kept Sri Lanka in the hunt, but the lack of support from the other end proved costly.

West Indies U19’s Jakeem Pollard emerged as the hero with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 34 runs. His disciplined bowling under pressure dismantled the Sri Lankan middle order, ensuring the hosts’ victory.

The second Youth ODI is set for September 2 at Coolidge Cricket Grounds, where Sri Lanka U19 will look to level the series.
