Right-handed batsman Raynard Van Tonder smashed a brilliant century for the visiting South Africa U19s against Sri Lanka U19 Board XI in their two-day warm-up game today at MCA grounds. 

After opting to bat first, the visitors piled up a mammoth 343 for 5 before declaring their innings. Van Tonder consumed 164 balls for his mammoth knock of 147 which contained 7 sixes and 9 fours. The Proteas’ skipper Wiaan Mulder stroked 79 off 90 deliveries with one massive six and 11 boundaries. For the hosts’, St. Sebastian’s College seamer, Asher Warnakoolasuriya picked up 2 wickets.

The young Sri Lankans in reply were in deep trouble as 16-year old left-arm seamer picked up 2 wickets. The home team were 33 for 3 at close of play.

The Sri Lanka U19 Board XI is led by Isipathana College all-rounder Ayana Siriwardana and top-notch players like Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Revan Kelly, Avindu Theekshana, Lasith Crosspulle who were discarded from the squad for the first Youth Test are taking part in this game.

The match will continue for second day’s play tomorrow (21st June).
