Sri Lankan U15 Women’s National Football team will be taking part in the 2nd edition of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) U15 Women’s Championship.

The tournament will be held from 9th-18th August 2018 at Chalimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan.

Sri Lanka has been drawn in group A along with last year’s runners-up India and host Bhutan. Group B comprises of last year’s winners Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan.

Sri Lanka did not take part in the first edition which was held in Bangladesh and was contested by only 4 countries. This time around Pakistan and Sri Lanka are taking part thus making it more competitive.

Top two teams of each group will play each other in the semi-finals on 16th August.  Finals of the 2018 SAFF U15 Women’s Championship will be played on 18th August.

The Sri Lankan team who are taking part for the first time will be led by Uthpala Jayakodi from Kavisigamuwa Maha Vidyalaya, Kurunegala while Nimesha Bandara from Bendiwewa Maha Vidyalaya in Polonnaruwa will be the vice-captain.

It is promising to see six players from Jaffna schools in the squad as well as Maliyadeva Balika MV also having six players.

The 23-player squad is coached by Mohamed Ajwad and assisted by J.P.S. Priyankara and Ms. D.M. Menaka Dissanayake. Goalkeeping coach is Mahinda Galagedera and the team will be managed by Ms. N.N. Kulathunga.

The Sri Lankan team will be taking this tourney as an added training and experience platform in order to prepare for the AFC U16 Women’s Championship 2019 Qualifiers. Sri Lanka will be hosting matches of Group A which comprises of China PR, Uzbekistan, Jordan and Guam all of whom have previously qualified for the final round. The qualifiers will be played from 15th to 23rd September 2018.
