West Indies fought back strongly with the bat on Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, finishing the day on 271 for 5 in reply to Sri Lanka’s first innings total of 300.
Resuming their first innings, the hosts faced several hiccups at the top order, but were steadied by an unbeaten sixth-wicket partnership between Amir Jangoo and captain Roston Chase.
Middle-order batter Amir Jangoo led the resistance with a composed unbeaten 78 off 174 deliveries, striking seven boundaries during his patient knock. Chase provided excellent support at the other end, remaining unbeaten on 42 as the pair frustrated the Sri Lankan attack with an unbroken century partnership.
Sri Lanka’s seamers enjoyed success earlier in the innings, with Asitha Fernando and Milan Rathnayake claiming two wickets apiece to keep the visitors in control for large periods of the day.
However, Jangoo and Chase ensured West Indies closed the gap significantly before stumps, taking the hosts to within 37 runs of Sri Lanka’s first innings total with five wickets still in hand.
