Sri Lanka seized control of the second and final Test against Bangladesh as they are 3 wickets away from clinching the series, 2-0 in Chattogram.
The day began with Sri Lanka on 102/6, with overnight batters Angelo Mathews and Prabath Jayasuriya remaining at the crease.
Sri Lanka managed to bolster their lead further as Mathews and Jayasuriya continued to frustrate the hosts, adding a 43-run partnership for the 7th wicket.
Mathews went on to score his 41st half-century in Test Cricket, while Jayasuriya added a valuable 28 runs towards the end as Sri Lanka declared their innings at 157/7, setting a massive target – 511 for the hosts.
Bangladesh opening pair Mahmudul Hasan and Zakir Hasan managed to survive the fast bowling burst up front with a decent stand, but the introduction of spin worked the visitors’ way as Jayasuriya bowled Mahmudul for 24 runs in the 10th over of the innings.
Vishwa Fernando produced a fine over to get Zakir out and Lahiru Kumara delivered a peach to bowl the Skipper Najmul Shanto out. Mominul Haque once again stood out for the hosts with a fighting half-century, but straight after he reached the milestone, he top-edged a sweep of the bowling off Jayasuriya which was caught by Lahiru Kumara in the deep square-leg.
Sri Lanka had Bangladesh four-down for 132 at the Tea break. The former Bangladesh Skipper Shakib Al Hasan and wicket-keeper batter Litton Das showed excellent resistance in the final session, adding a 61-run stand for the fifth wicket before Kamindu Mendis struck to dismiss the former for 36 runs.
Three overs later, Lahiru Kumara struck to remove the other set batter Das for 38 runs. Mehidy Hasan, who came to bat at No. 8, batted positively and showed some resistance with the bat as Bangladesh finished Day 4 at 268 for 7.
Sri Lanka need only 3 wickets more to win the game and clean sweep the series, which at present seems an inevitable series conclusion.
