Sri Lanka placed 3rd at South Asian Archery Championship

Sri Lanka was placed overall 3rd in the South Asian Archery Championship which was held at the BKSP grounds in Savar, Bangladesh from the 24th to 26th March.

Held for the 3rd time, the competition saw participation of over 120 competitors from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan who competed in recurve division 19 men’s and 15 women’s and compound division 18 men’s and 11 women’s – will compete in the championship that includes compound division, men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles events.

Host Bangladesh managed to overcome the regional super power India at the competition as they emerged champions winning six gold, five silver and one bronze medals in the 10-event meet. India who have earlier been the invincible winners of the region had to be satisfied with a 2nd place finish.

Sri Lankan archers were placed overall third in the team championship as they bagged Bronze in the Men’s Recurve event (Lakmal Rajasinghe, Chandana Abeygunasekara, Sajeev De Silva), Women’s Recurve event (Rehana Tayabally, Thisari Silva, Lakshari Kalubowila) and in the Compound mixed event (Udaya Perera, W.T Damayanthi) which made way for the Sri Lankan contingent to be placed ahead of the Nepal and Pakistan who were placed 4th and 5th respectively.

The 4th Edition of the South Asian Archery Championship is scheduled to be held in Pakistan in 2019.
