As part of the preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 & AFC Asian Cup 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 1 against Macau, the Sri Lanka National Football Team will take on Laos National Team in two friendly matches in Laos.

The first match will be played on 28th May and the second on 31st May.

A 23-man Sri Lankan squad took wing to Vientiane, Laos on 24th May to play two friendly matches against Laos. The team is led by experienced goalkeeper Sujan Perera and deputed by Kavindu Ishan both of whom were part of the squad which played the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Bhutan in 2015.

The team also had a 10-day training session in Doha, Qatar before leaving for Laos. The 31-man pool was in Doha preparing for the all-important qualifiers. The team played a friendly game against the Qatar Military Team which the Lankans lost 2-0. After which the squad was reduced to 23.

Sri Lanka ranked 202 in the world last played against Laos, currently ranked 184th, in 2016. This was at the AFC Solidarity Cup in Malaysia and Laos beat Sri Lanka 2-1, with Asikur Rahman getting a late goal for Sri Lanka.

The first match is on the 28th May kicking off at 5.00pm Sri Lanka time and will be played at the Laos National Stadium. The second on the 31st May will be played at the same venue and time.

After the two friendlies, the 23-man squad will continue their preparation in Vientiane before they travel to Zhuhai, China on 3rd June to play against Macau on 6th June.

On their official Facebook page, the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) states that the team is ready, and it’s expected that Sri Lanka will win the two games with the current momentum.  

The team is expected to return to the Island on 7th of June as the second leg of the qualifier will be played on the 11th June at Sugathadasa Stadium Colombo.
