Sri Lanka dazzles at the 2nd Asian Schools Athletic Championships

The Sri Lankan Athletic Team left the country earlier last week to participate in the Second Asian Schools Athletic Championships held Wuhan, China. Twelve athletes represented the island nation and bought back glory to the country. 

Each country is allowed six contestants each in the male and female categories and each member  could participate in two events in the following manner:

1.       One running event and one jumping event

2.       One running event and one throwing event

3.       One jumping event and one throwing event

 

The Sri Lankan youth did the island proud bringing a large number of medals.  Ryan Wickramaratne of Maristella College, Negembo excelled in the boys 400m and topped the winners list as he was placed first clocking a time of 49.03 seconds. He was also placed third in long jump recording a distance of 7.01m. His fellow colleague Uditha Chandrasena won the 300m hurdle event crossing the white line in 37.86 seconds. While he was placed first fellow countrymen Dinshika Ranatunge of Amabagamuwa Central College won the second place with a timing of 45.47 seconds.

Poorinma Guneratene of Leeds International School who stunned the crowd in the recently ended John Tarbet Athletic Championships topped her event high jump; as she was placed first with a height of 1.71m. Subhani Abeyratene of St. Joesphs College, Kegalle was placed first in the 300m girl’s event as she clocked a timing of 44.82 seconds. Nipun Kaldera of Loyale College, Negembo was placed first in the triple jump event as he recorded a distance of 14.50 meters.

Medals were also awarded to Thishmi Thiranga of Maliyadeva Balika as she was placed second in high jump as she recorded a height of 1.68m while I.P.G. Dhananjaya of Joesph Vaz College, Wennapuwa won the second place in long jump with a distance 7.16m and lastly Omaya Udayangani of Welimada Central College was placed second in the girl`s 400m as she clocked a timing of 57.16 seconds.
