Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) hosted 160 students from the Mass Communication Department of the University of Kelaniya as part of an educational field visit aimed at providing them with practical exposure to sports journalism and media operations of an international sport event.

As part of the visit, the students, accompanied by their academic staff, visited the RPICS, Colombo, where they were given the opportunity to conduct a field study on sports journalism, with a particular focus on cricket reporting, sports photography and managing international media operations.

The field study was conducted during the Sri Lanka vs. India Under-19 Second Four Day Game, providing the students with valuable hands-on experience in Press Box operations, live sports reporting and sports photography.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Media Unit also conducted a presentation on “Professional Practices in Sports Journalism”, followed by a productive Q&A session.

The students had the opportunity to engage with industry professionals, including professional photographers covering international cricket, and gain insights into the practical aspects and challenges of working in sports media.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity for the students to bridge classroom learning with real-world media practice, while gaining a better understanding of the professional standards and responsibilities involved in sports journalism.

The academic staff who accompanied the students included Senior Lecturer Mr. Saman Rajapaksha; Ms. Amali Nandasiri and Mrs. Dilini Gamage, Probationary Lecturer Mrs. Amani Rupasingha; and Assistant Lecturers Ms. Nipuni Bhagya and Mr. Savindu Iroshan.

The initiative is part of Sri Lanka Cricket’s commitment to its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, aimed at empowering and nurturing the next generation of professionals and contributing to the future development of the nation.
