The 27th Edition of the Mercantile Basketball League will commence during the third week of June…

Six men`s teams and three women`s teams will compete in the A Division of the tournament. Out of the nine corporates in competition here`s a look in to Commercial Credit Women`s Basketball Team.

The team began their practices three-months ago. It was vital that they do practice for a considerable period of time since the team line-up consists of young players but filled with talent. So the raw talent had to be molded into a winning combination. Hence, the long term practice strategy.

Since Commercial Credit lacks the height advantage, their primary focus in practice has been in developing speed. The quickness in players to adapt from defence to offense, vice-versa will help the team to top the opponents even with a less height advantage.

Apart from brushing up the skills for the game, the team has prepared themselves mentally. A part of the long term practice strategy was to ensure the team chemistry to be in a prime position. It`s a young side, so the belief and the faith among the players will take them a long way in pressure situations.

coachCoach of the Commercial Credit women’s team speaking to Thepapare.com said, “I took over a girls’ team after 19 years. All this time I have being coaching boys’ basketball teams. But, this won`t be a difficult task since we have got a good preparation for the tournament. Even though, we couldn’t perform well at the last tournament we have picked up a lot and we have improved from all the sides including motivation as well.  A lot of hard work and commitment was put from the team as well so we have come to a good standard now. The plus point of this team would be the level of energy with all the team members and also all players are equally good”.

Thushani Rajapakse will lead the Commercial Credit Women`s side. Prasadi De Cruze will play alongside her as the next line with tons of experience. Prasdi`s international experience when she represented Sri Lanka will come handy to cross the winning line.

Thushani RajapakseCaptian Thushani Rajapakse speaking to ThePapare.com said, “Our teams’ biggest strength is our coach and the level of the energy we have within our team. We also have lot of young players which have a really good speed that make our team stronger and we have a balance team. I am confident that in this tournament we can make a massive change in all games we play and we can enter into finals as well.

With ample preparation Commercial Credit will be a team to look out for. The only disadvantage for the lasses will be the lack of experience but with the preparation the skills should help to fill in the experience lapse. A well prepared team is always a tough team.
