The South West Asian Football Federation (SWAFF) was officially formed on 31st May 2018 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia along with the representatives from FIFA, AFC and the 14 SWAFF member federations.

The new regional association was created to develop and improve the quality of football in the region of South West Asia over the coming years, with the hopes of seeing more SWAFF nations qualify for future iterations of FIFA World Cup.

Initiated by Saudi Arabian Football Federation led by Dr. Adel Ezzat who is also elected as the President of SWAFF comprises of 14 countries. Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iraq, Kuwait, Maldives, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, UAE, and Yemen are the founding members.

The body will address issues such as lack of football facilities, training and coaching knowledge and commercial and competition experience that has enabled football to thrive in more developed football nations and regions.

SWAFF believes that football can be a hidden social worker and is an investment and not a cost. According to The Indian Express, Saudi Arabia has offered each SWAFF member USD500,000 (LKR 80million) to join the new federation.

Anura De Silva expects this new governing body will further help Sri Lanka to develop football.

Speaking to the media De Silva stated;

“This will give a new platform to emphasis on football specially grassroot and junior football which is in the agenda and objective of SWAFF. We are optimistic something good will happen to our football.”
