Football Sri Lanka (FSL) officially launched the inaugural South Asian Super Cup 2025 at a media conference held at the Football House, Colombo, with the unveiling of the championship trophy.

The event, scheduled to take place at the Racecourse International Stadium, Colombo, will see Sri Lanka and Maldives face off in a thrilling two-match series on 6th and 9th September 2025, with both matches kicking off at 5.00 PM.

The South Asian Super Cup is the brainchild of Mr. Jaswar Umar, President of Football Sri Lanka, introduced to sustain international football action in the region following the postponement of the SAFF Championship to 2026. The tournament marks a new chapter for South Asian football, offering players and fans a platform to experience high-intensity, competitive matches.

Looking beyond 2025, the South Asian Super Cup will become an annual tournament, expanding to feature more South Asian teams in a tournament format in the years ahead. This year’s edition, with Sri Lanka and Maldives competing in a two-match series, serves as the launchpad for what will grow into a key fixture in the South Asian football calendar.

A Rivalry Renewed: Sri Lanka vs Maldives

The footballing history between Sri Lanka and the Maldives has been marked by passion, pride, and closely fought battles.

Sri Lanka – crowned SAFF Champions in 1995 – has a rich footballing tradition.

Maldives – two-time SAFF Champions in 2008 and 2018 – has grown into one of the region’s strongest teams, with football being the island nation’s most loved sport.

Over the decades, matches between the two nations have produced nail-biting contests, often decided by narrow margins. While the Maldives have had the upper hand in recent years, Sri Lanka continues to view the encounters as benchmarks of progress and an opportunity to reassert its footballing presence in South Asia.

The Super Cup therefore promises not only two games of football, but a continuation of a historic rivalry – one that embodies the passion of South Asian football and the shared pride of two island nations.
