The Women’s Under 23 Super 4 Provincial tournament, organized by Sri Lanka Cricket will commence today, with two games set to take place at Horana and Bandaragama.
The 4-team tournament is the first of its kind for women and will be played on a league basis, with each team playing 3 games and the team finishing with most points being declared champions.
The teams will be captained by 4 up and coming women’s cricketers in Hasini Perera, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Malsha Shehani and Sathya Sandeepani; 3 of the 4 have represented Sri Lanka at the highest stage. Perera recently featured in Sri Lanka’s three ODIs and T20Is against the touring Pakistan team and is by far the most experienced of the lot having played 28 ODIs and 20 T20Is. Samarawickrama represented the Sri Lanka team last at the Women’s World Cup held last year and has played 4 ODIs and 1 T20I while Malsha Shehani played a solitary ODI for Sri Lanka early last year. Sandeepani, who studied at Devapathiraja College, Ambalangoda, is the only one of the four to have not played international cricket.
