Sri Lanka Cricket is planning to bid for two flagship ICC events in the cycle that runs from 2023 to 2031.

According to the SLC CEO Ashley de Silva in an interview given to Daily News, the Sri Lanka Cricket board intends to bid for two major Men’s events.

The ICC had invited expressions of interest from its Member nations until March 15 for 28 global events that will be held in the 2023-2031 cycle but due to the coronavirus pandemic the meetings have been deferred indefinitely.

De Silva told the Daily News, “We have shown interest for two events which we cannot disclose at this stage because of the confidentiality”
“Once you show the expression of interest it’s a matter of them calling for bids. Nobody will know who has shown interest. We don’t know what other countries that have shown interest. Likewise, the other countries will not know what we have shown interest. It’s only the ICC who does it very discreetly, we’re going for the main ones in the men’s events”

So far, Sri Lanka have hosted 4 major Men’s ICC global cricket events since their admission to ICC as a Full Member. They have also hosted 3 more Major ICC events in Women’s and Youth tournaments.

Tournaments Sri Lanka hosted so far

  • 1996 Wills World Cup (Joint Host)
  • 2000 U19 World Cup
  • 2002 Champions Trophy
  • 2006 U19 World Cup
  • 2011 ICC World Cup (Joint Host)
  • 2012 Men’s World T20
  • 2012 Women’s World T20

Unfortunately, Sri Lanka haven’t hosted a major ICC tournament since 2012 and this could be a perfect opportunity for Sri Lanka Cricket fans to witness another major World Tournament.

However, there have been few disagreements from the Cricket Boards of India (BCCI), Australia (CA) and England (CB) for the proposed schedule of ICC Tournaments as ICC has added two more Men’s tournaments to the traditional ICC Schedule, restricting timeframe for bilateral and domestic T20 tournaments but ICC is still positive that they could make the proposed schedule work with the assistance of ICC members.
