133 Umpires across Sri Lanka given promotions

Chairman of the umpires committee at SLC, Deepal Madurapperuma had proposed the idea for the wellbeing of cricket umpires at the recently concluded executive committee meeting. Following the approval of the proposal, SLC has decided to offer contracts according to 3 categories, International umpires, emerging umpires and level 1 umpires.

A pandemic, cricket and its people

Four of the elite umpires in Sri Lanka will be included in the International category, 6 umpires in the emerging category and 10 umpires will be offered a level 1 contract.

Lyndon Hannibal, Ravindra Wimalasiri, Prageeth Rambukwella, and Ruchira Palliyaguruge are the four international umpires, while the emerging umpires and level 1 umpires are yet to be named.

“We have four umpires for International matches and six umpires in the Emerging category and 10 umpires in the Level-1 category, I am glad that the SLC under the Chairmanship of Shammi Silva has provided their consent for this move and very soon we hope to finalize the matter,” Madurapperuma told the Daily News.

This is the first time in history that Sri Lanka Cricket has taken in umpires on a contract basis and these umpires will be getting a fixed monthly allowance apart from their match fee as per their gradings. The initiative was heavily backed by the ICC Elite Panel umpire from Sri Lanka, Kumar Dharmasena who also acts as the advisor for the umpire committee on a voluntary basis.
