One of the oldest competitions in Sri Lankan sports, the Colombo Championships Tennis Tournament, crowned Royal’s crown jewel, Sharmal Dissanyake as this year’s Men’s Open singles champion, last evening. (18th July)

The Colombo Championship Tennis tournament is the first major tournament the Sri Lanka Tennis Association initiated and 103 years later, it is considered to be the best in quality and otherwise. All top-ranking players from around the island participate along with occasional international appearances.

This year, Davis Cup representative Sharmal Dissanayake of Royal College stunned the playing section courts as he took on the once ever so mighty, Dineshkanthan Thangarajah in the Men’s Open Singles final.

Royal and Ladies’ conquer U-17 Tennis

The 2018 under 13 champs, Ladies’ College added one more title..

Both players had a breezy walk through to the final having no real competition from anyone in the first few rounds. Sharmal Dissanayake defeated Vhishmanshanth Chandramohan, Innthujan Selvarathnarajah, Vinuja Wijebandara and Savith Weerasinghe in the top half of the draw to make the final.

Recently crowned SSC Open Men’s Champion and comeback man, Dineshkanthan Thangarajah got the better of Thethauraj Nimalraj, Mark Senevirathne, Chathurya Nilaweera and 5th seed Mufazzal Hossain to reach the final through the bottom half of the draw.

Wrapping up National Schools U17 Tennis Championship

The 2018 under 13 champs, Ladies’ College added one more title…

The final was a brilliantly modeled three-setter, coming down to the last set to determine the victor. Sharmal got an early lead, taking the first set 6/2. Thangarajah dug himself out of the mud, with an equalizing 6/3 win to take the match to a sudden death third set.

Be it the time off Dinesh took of a couple of years to pursue his coaching venture, but the once mighty champ could not find the juice to fight the energy the youngster Sharmal brought forth in the third set. Hanging in there till the scores were at 5/5, Sharmal Dissanayake broke serve to finish off the match and take home the coveted Men’s Open Championship crown.
