Sean Abbott takes 6-14 on return after Phillip Hughes death

Sean Abbott took a career-best 6-14 in the second innings of his first match since his short-pitched delivery led to the death of batsman Phillip Hughes.

Abbott, 22, helped New South Wales dismiss Queensland for 99 to win by an innings and 78 runs in the Sheffield Shield at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Australia batsman Hughes was struck on the neck at the same venue on 25 November.

The left-hander collapsed on the pitch and died in hospital two days later.

Abbott, who has played three ODIs and one T20 international for Australia, produced lively pace and reverse swing, was on a hat-trick at one point and finished with 8-67 in the match.

He received a standing ovation as he left the pitch, and New South Wales coach Trevor Bayliss said: “To do what he did really showed the character that he has.
