Dialog Schools Rugby League 2025 – Science College Preview

Let’s take a closer look at the Science College Rugby team that will be competing in the Dialog Schools Rugby League 2025.

History

Science College, Mount Lavinia, began its rugby journey in 1978 and has since earned a reputation as a fearless and tenacious contender in the schools’ rugby circuit. Often hailed as “giant-killers,” Science College is known for toppling more established teams with sheer determination and grit. A defining moment in their history came in 2015 when they triumphed in the prestigious Milo President’s Trophy Knockout Tournament, defeating rugby powerhouse Isipathana College in a nail-biting final.

Their ascent into the top-tier league in 2011 marked a pivotal shift, solidifying their place among the country’s elite school rugby programs. Renowned for their relentless “do-or-die” attitude, Science College has consistently earned the respect of opponents and fans alike. The school has also produced several standout players who have gone on to don the national jersey, further cementing its legacy in Sri Lankan rugby.

Current Outfit

Science College’s squad for the 2025 season is set to feature a well-balanced blend of experienced seniors and emerging young talent. With a strong core of players boasting prior 1st XV experience, the team enjoys solid on-field leadership and stability. Their dynamic, intelligent backline—combined with the school’s trademark “do-or-die” spirit—makes them a dangerous force in open play. Built to adapt to a variety of game situations, this versatile lineup promises to be both formidable and unpredictable.

Leading the side this season is fly-half Dilruwan Perera, who takes on the captaincy role. Supporting him in leadership are Co-Vice Captains Sithara Madusanka and Hiruka Edirisinghe, forming a core leadership group expected to drive the team forward with passion, pace, and tactical discipline.

Players to Watch Out For

Skipper Dilruwan Perera will orchestrate the attack from the fly-half position, showcasing his sharp vision, ability to breach the try line, and consistency in converting points. His tactical awareness and leadership will be crucial in dictating the tempo and guiding the team on the field. Supporting him is Co-Vice Captain Hiruka Edirisinghe, whose pace and agility make him a dynamic presence. Known for his powerful runs and solid tackles, Edirisinghe will play a key role in both attack and defense. On the wing, Rithnuka Dabare is another exciting prospect—renowned for his dazzling runs and ability to exploit space, he will be one to watch.

In the forwards, flanker Sithara Madusanka will lead the pack with his exceptional defensive speed and quick decision-making. While not the heaviest unit, this forward pack compensates with versatility and the ability to raise the tempo when needed. Damitha Prabod adds further strength as a reliable ball carrier, offering valuable go-forward momentum to the Mount Lavinia side.

Coaches

Veteran coach Collin Denish Peter, who famously guided Science College to the pinnacle of school rugby with their historic victory over Isipathana College in the 2015 Milo President’s Trophy Knockout final, returns as head coach for the upcoming season. His comeback signals a strong intent from the Mount Lavinia camp to reclaim their former glory. Adding to the strength of the coaching panel is Lasindu Karunathilake, the captain of that triumphant 2015 team, who joins as Assistant Coach. His first-hand experience and deep understanding of Science College’s fighting spirit will be invaluable to the squad. With a blend of proven leadership, legacy, and a deep connection to the school’s rugby heritage, this coaching team is well-positioned to steer Science College through the challenges of the upcoming season.

Expectations for the Season

Following a challenging previous season with limited victories, Science College will be eager to stage a strong comeback in the upcoming league. With a core of experienced players, renewed emphasis on strength and conditioning, and the influential return of consultant coach Collin Denish, the team is poised for improvement. While they may not enter the season as title favorites, Science College will be aiming to boost their win percentage and rekindle their reputation for “giant-killing” upsets against top-tier opponents. Adopting a match-by-match approach, the Mount Lavinia side will focus on execution and playing to their strengths, with a top-two finish in the group as their primary target.
