Schools Under 19 Limited Overs – Joes, St Sebastians and Gurukula Central in wins

Three pre-quarter final encounters of the under 19 all island limited overs tournament 2013/14 were played at different grounds on 25th Tuesday. St. Joseph’s College Colombo, Gurukula College Kelaniya and St. Sebastian College Moratuwa registered wins and secured their place in the quarter final stage.

Priyamal helps Joes thrash Dharmasoka

Sri Lanka under 19 player and Josephian deputy skipper Priyamal ‘Bullet’ Perera scored a skillful century to help St. Joseph’s College thrash Dharmasoka College by 118 runs in their pre quarter-final encounter played at NCC grounds.

St. Joseph’s College taking the first lease of the wicket scored 250/6 in 50 overs. Middle order batsman Priyamal Perera scored a stunning century in just 85 balls to propel the Josephian score to 250. Priyamal reached his half century in the 45th over and he reached his century in the 50th over which included some boisterous hitting. Skipper Dylan Fernandopulle made 45 while Sokian captain and under 19 youth player Ramesh Mendis took 4 wickets. 

Chasing a strong target of 251, Dharmasoka College found Aravinda Akurugoda’s leg spinners hard to handle as they were bundled out for a mere 132 runs with the right arm leg spinner capturing 5 wickets. Skipper Ramesh Mendis was the top run scorer making 34 runs for the visiting team from Ambalangoda.

St. Joseph’s – 250/6 in 50 overs : Dylan Fernandopulle 45, Priyamal Perera 103, Kalpa Ravihara 27, Yashan Samarasinghe 21, Ramesh Mendis 4/53.

Dharmasoka – 132 all out in 35.4 overs: Ramesh Mendis 34, Kaveesh Kumara 27, Aravinda Akurugoda 5/15, Duran De Alwis 3/25.

 

Anuradhapura Central brought down by Gurukula College

Gurukula College brought down the high riding minnows Anuradhapura Central College to the ground when they defeated this seasons Division 2 champions by 5 wickets in their pre quarter-final encounter played at Bloomfield grounds.

Anuradhapura Central College batting first could only muster 117 losing all their 10 wickets. Dilshan Chamika was the top runs scorer with 53 valuable runs while Lahiru Chamara captured 3 wickets for Gurukula College. 

Chasing a moderate target of 118, Gurukula College cruised to victory in the 31st over with Roshan Anurudda top scoring with 45 unbeaten runs in 63 balls with 6 boundaries while skipper and opening batsman Hashan Dumindu made 39 runs at the top of the innings. 

Chief Scores: 

Anuradhapura – 117 all out in 43.1 overs : Dilshan Chamika 53, Lahiru Chamara 3/18, Hashan Dumindu 2/14, Jayamal Wanniarachchi 2/16.

Gurukula – 118/5 in 30.3 overs : Roshan Anuruddha 45, Hashan Dumindu 39.

 

Trinity beaten by Sebs in Asgiriya

Trinity College, Kandy was defeated by 5 wickets in their own backyard by St. Sebastian College Moratuwa in their pre quarter-final encounter played at Asgiriya stadium.

Trinity College batting first made 192 for 9 wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Left handed Kaveen Hiniduma was the most impressive batsmen scoring a timely 51 runs in 63 balls. Tailender Lakshan Jayasinghe contributed with an unbeaten 38 while right arm off spinner Umeshka Morais was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets giving away only 23 runs.

Chasing a par score of 194, 16 year old Avishka Fernando guided the St.Sebastian College chase stroking 59 runs while Sangeeth Cooray chipped in with 42 runs. Raveen Sayer took 2 scalps but failed to contain the Sebastanite batsmen from getting to their target in the 45th over.
