School Cricket update: Charuka and Pathum shines in massive Josephian victory

16-year old off-spinner Charuka Raveen playing his first 1st XI match took a 10-wicket match bag and his skipper Pathum Madusanka struck 152 as St. Joseph’s College recorded an innings and 3-run victory over Wesley College in their under 19 division 1 match played at Darley Road. 

Joes resuming from their overnight score of 197/2 piled on another 69 runs in one hour to gain a first-innings lead of 167 before declaring the innings. Opening batsman and captain Pathum Madusanka managed to score 152 as Joes posted 266/5 in 59 overs. Wesley skipper Jonathan Cadermanpulle and Zenith Wickramanayake took 2 wickets each. 

The visitors in their second innings battled hard to survive but the Josephian bowlers somehow took the wickets in time to close out the game. Charuka Raveen made a dream debut as he took 5 scalps in the 2nd innings as well after taking 5 wickets in the first innings as well. Jeshan De Silva batted with grit staying unbeaten on 44 as Wesley was bowled out for 164.

Chamika Karunarathne 154* stands out in Royal affair

Former Royal and Sri Lanka under 19 skipper Chamika Karunarathne’s sparkling 154 helped Royal College, Colombo to gain first-innings points over Royal College, Panadura in their drawn under 19 match played at Reid Avenue. 

The boys from Colombo amassed 312 while the boys from Panadura fell on 211 in their 1st innings. Left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya took 5 wickets for the hosts. The visitors in their 2nd innings batted with much more confidence and superiority as they saved the game thanks to an unbeaten 80 by Madawa Nimesh.

Prince of Wales’ College vs D.S Senanayake College

Sri Lanka under 19 batsman Akeel Inham smashed a brilliant 111 as D.S Senanayake College took control of their under 19 match against Prince of Wales College at stumps on day 1 in Moratuwa. 

Akeel’s century had five 6s and five 4s and half centuries by Thimila Vidyasekara, Kaveen Bandara and Shifran Muthalif propelled D.S. Senanayake to commanding 375 for 5 declared before the hosts were struggling at 73 for 4.

Nalanda writhed to bat against the Trinity bowlers as the visitors took full command on day one of their match at Campbell Place. 

Spin duo of Raveen Sayer and Duvindu Thilakaratne picked up four wickets apiece as Trinity restricted Nalanda to 183 and then they stroked 111 for the loss of only 4 wickets on a batting friendly surface.

Zahira College vs Carey College

Newcomers Carey College was tested by the arch-rivals Zahira College at the end of day 1 in their under 19 division 1 match at Maradana. 

A four-wicket haul by left-arm spinner Ramsan Rafaideen and an unbeaten half century by right-hander Tuan Safran provided Zahira the advantage after Carey was bowled out for 148 and the hosts replied with 101 for 3.

Richmond College vs Dharmapala College

Defending School Cricket Champions, Richmond College gained a first innings lead on the first day itself in their under 19 division 1 match against Dharmapala College at Police Park. 

Left-arm spinner Pasindu Keshan picked up 8 wickets for 32 runs to restrict Richmond to 152 runs and help Dharmapala fight back after they were bundled out for 123. Ashen Abeykoon made an unbeaten 54 for the hosts while Charith Asalanka made 42 for the visitors.
