School Cricket Summary: Naveen and Thimira inspire Thurstan to a massive win

Spinner Naveen Gunawardena’s 10 wickets in the match and skipper Thimira Jayasinghe’s century helped Thurstan College defeat Maliyadeva College with ease by 10 wickets at Thurstan grounds on Saturday in their under 19 division one encounter.

Winning the toss and bowling, Thurstan restricted Maliyadeva College to a mere 174 all out in the 51st over. Sachintha Peiris stared with the bat for Maliyadeva with 61 runs and Keshan Wijerathne chipped in with an unbeaten 41. Naveen Gunawardena was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up 6 wickets for 38 runs while off-spinner Ayesh Weerarathne captured 2 scalps.

Batting in their first innings, Thurstan College declared their innings at 280 for 5 in 59.5 overs. Right-handed Thimira Jayasinghe scored a magnificent century (111) and Isuru Udara and Chalana Nanayakkara chipped in with 75 and 58 respectively. Lakshan Somaweera scalped 2 wickets for the visitors.

In their second innings, Maliyadeva College could only managed 113 all out in 43 overs. Prabath Keppetipola made a hard fought 36. Ayesh Weerarthne stared with the ball in the second innings for Thurstan as he took a match-winning six-wicket haul and Naveen Gunawardena completed his 10 wicket match as he picked 4 for 48 in the second innings as Maliyadeva could only set a single figure target for Thurstan College (7 runs).

Thomians continue to impress

S. Thomas’ College continues to impress in the ongoing under 19 division one cricket tournament as they beat Nalanda College on first innings points at Campbell Place.

The hosts, Nalanda College won the toss and elected to field. Nalanda College did not impress as they could not make full use of the day 1 track. Thora scored a respectable 286 all out in 60.3 overs. Left-hander Nipuna Gamage top scored for Thora with 80 runs while Yohan Mendis scored a fighting half century (50). Fast-bowler Malinga Amarasinghe picked up 4 for 63 while Ayantha de Silva managed 3 for 47 and Lakshitha Rasanja chipped in with 2 for 29.

The game was cut short on day one as rain interrupted play with Nalanda College 26 for 5 in 10 overs at the end of day 1.

Continuing from where they left Nalanda College could only have added 54 runs as they were shut out for a disappointing 80 in 30.5 overs. Dasun Senewirathne top scored for Nalanda with 27 runs. Skipper Helakamal Nanayakkara and fast-bowler Senal de Silva picked up 3 wickets each and spinner Tharidu Rathnayake managed 2 scalps.

Following on, Nalanda College scored 156 for 9 in 74 overs. Thanura Hettiarachchi top scored with 32 and left-hander Malinga Amarasinghe scored 25 for Nalanda. Tharindu Rathnayake’s impressive season continued as he picked up 8 for 70 in the second innings. Thora missed the chance to win the match outright as they failed to pick the last wicket of Nalanda College but registered a 1st innings win.

Ananda College miss outright win by 1 wicket

Ananda College failed to pick the final wicket of Dharmaraja College as they missed an outright win by 1 wicket but managed to pick up first innings points at Ananda Mawatha.

Winning the toss and batting first, Ananda College managed a mammoth 311 for 9 when they declared their first innings. Nipun Chandimal top scored with 62 while Dilanka Sandakan scored 55 runs. Wenuka Galahitiyawa captured 4 wickets for 131 and Ruchira Pupullewatta picked up 3 Ananda wickets.

Batting in their first innings Dharmaraja College only could have managed 190 as they were bundled out in 65.3 overs. Kavinda Rathnayaka top scored with 77 runs for the Rajans. Off-spinner Sammu Ashan took 4 wickets and Isuru Dileepa managed to take 3 wickets.

Asked to follow on, Rajans were saved by their last pair as they hung on by the scrap of their teeth to save the game. Dharmaraja College scored 125 for 9 in their second innings as Deshan Gunasinghe top scored with 40 while Sammu Ashan took a five-wicket haul and Isuru Dileepa chipped in with 2 wickets.

De Mazenod in a tame draw with St. Sebastian’s

De Mazenod College drew their game against St. Sebastian’s College which was played at De Mazenod College grounds in Kandana.

Winning the toss and bowling first the home town boys managed to restrict St. Sebastian’s for a moderate 183 all out in 66.1 overs. Akash Senarathna and Rukshan Fernando ran through the Sebastian batting as they managed to pick up 6 wickets between them. Kusal Lakthilina top scored with 55 and Sandaruwan Fernando chipped in with 37 runs for the visitors.

Batting in their first innings the home boys De Mazenod passed the Sebs score with ease as they scored 258 for 9 in their first innings. Shehan Jayawrdena top scored with an unbeaten 54* while Malshan Fernando made 52 and Lasith Croospulle missed his half century by one run as he was dismissed on 49 runs.

St. Sebastian’s could only have managed 12 runs for their second innings as the match came to a tame end.
