Two tons down Reid Avenue

The under 19 1st XI game between Royal College, Colombo and St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena came to a drawn end today at Reid with two tons being scored at the end of two days of play.

St. Benedict’s College winning the toss and inviting the hosts to face leather first didn’t have the start they would have expected as they found it hard to make early inroads into the Royal batting line up. The first wicket falling just shy of one run of a 100 run opening partnership which could have also brought up Hasitha Samarasinghe’s half ton. After his partner’s departure, Naveen Withanapathirana made a steady 115 runs off 205 balls which helped Royal declare on 284 runs with the fall of 6 wickets

Royal College 1st Innings – 284/6 dec.

After a decent start of 30 runs, the Ben’s batsmen were all able to make starts but failed to capitalize on them, most of them falling in the 20’s and 30’s. However opener Mahel Jayalath made a well compiled 51 runs which included 6 hits to the rope. Yet, the man who stole the lime light for the ‘Greens’ was Nimesh Fonseka who made a delightful 126 which included runs all over the park. It was truly an eye pleaser to watch this young lad handle the willow.

St. Benedict’s College 1st Innings – 273 all out

The game which was on the slow side, ended with the umpires deciding to call it out after the end of the Bens inning as the decision was obvious.

Defending champions Richmond College Galle cruised to their third outright victory of the season by defeating Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda in their encounter played at the Galle stadium.

Batting first Dharmasoka was bundled out for 90 runs in less than 40 overs thanks to a fabulous spell by left arm seamer Chamod Piyumal who picked up a six-wicket-haul and was ably supported by Thisara Banuka who picked up three.

In reply Richmond scored 279 for 9 declared with wicketkeeper batsman Sithara Gimhan scoring 93 runs supported by Avindu Thikshana and Dhananjaya Lakshan who scored 48 and 35 respectively. For the bowling side Dinuka Dilshan and Sachin Divangana chipped in with 2 wickets each.

Trailing by 189 runs, Dharmasoka College had periods of good play but wickets at regular intervals meant that they could not send Richmond into bat again.
