School Cricket Summary – Aravinda Akurugoda century saves Joes

All-rounder Aravinda Akurugoda scored his first century in under 19 cricket as St. Joseph’s College fought back well to draw their 94th annual encounter against St. Benedict’s College at Darley Road. 

The hosts were bowled out for 79 in their first innings. Seamer Geethal Fernando and off-spinner Geethika Jayathilake captured 7 wickets amongst them. The Benedictines in their reply were all out for 189 runs. Skipper Mahel made 55 runs with the bat. The spin trio of Suren De Silva, Aravinda Akurugoda and Harin Cooray captured 3 wickets apiece for the home team. 

The Josephians came out to bat with a deficit of 110 and they lost 3 wickets before putting even 75 runs on the board when the two experienced campaigners, skipper Pathum Madusanka and Aravinda Akurugoda combined to take their team to a comfortable position with a 149-run stand for the 4th wicket. Right-handed Akurugoda smashed 106 in 76 balls and his innings included 8 fours and 6 sixes. Pathum was unfortunate to miss his 3rd ton as he was dismissed for 84. Off-spinners, Geethika and Navod Abeysinghe shared 7 wickets for the visitors.

St. Joseph’s posted 276 runs and declared setting a victory target of 168 for the boys from Kotahena but they ended the game on 90 for 5. Wicket-keeper batsman Janidu Karunathilake made 43 runs.

Trinity College vs S. Thomas’ College

Thomians pounded the league front-runners, Trinity College to a first-innings win in their annual cricket encounter played for the Ranil Abeynaike Trophy at Mount Lavinia. 

Nipuna Gamage shined for the hosts with an unbeaten knock of 117 in their first innings and Trinity having ended day one on 80 for 1 despite a knock of 62 by Nushan Weerasinghe was restricted to a score of 222 with off-spinner Sajana de Silva doing the damage with a five-wicket haul.

S. Thomas’ – 309/3 declared in 73 overs: Ravindu Sasanka 52, Nipuna Gamage 117 n.o., Chenutha Wickramasinghe 65, Dhanush Peiris 36*; Raveen Sayer 2/125.

Royal College vs Prince of Wales College

Royal defeated Prince of Wales by an innings and 83 runs in their under 19 division one match which concluded at Moratuwa on Saturday. This was the first Royal win against Prince of Wales College after 15 years.

Hasitha Samarasinghe, Geeshanth Panditharatne and Navin Vidanapathirana cracked half tons as the visitors made of 284 for 5 before declaring their innings. Royal bowlers succeeded on 2nd day as they took 19 wickets in the three sessions of play to defeat the hosts. Left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya was in top form as he ended with a match bag of 9 for 53.
