Savindu Peiris spins Prince of Wales’ to innings victory

Here’s a brief look into a few matches which took place today in the Singer U19 Division I Cricket Tournament.  

Prince of Wales College vs Mahinda College

POW registered an innings and 73 run victory against Mahinda College in their Group B encounter at Galle. Mahinda College resumed play at 54 for 3. They could only add 135 runs for their remaining 7 wickets as they were cleaned up for just 189 in 81.2 overs. Off-spinner, Savindu Peiris took 5 for 41 and left-arm spinner, Thilan Nimesh took 2 for 32 for POW.

With a daunting task on their hands, the home side came to bat for their second innings in the second session of day 2. But this time around they could only survive for 33.3 overs as they crumbled to a solitary 105 runs. Savindu was yet again the hero with the ball for POW. His second innings figures stood at 4 for 47 and a match bag of 9 for 88.

Early on, POW after being asked to bat first managed to post 367 for 8 in 59 overs. Skipper Vishwa Chathuranga slammed 146 while Thilan Nimesh scored a valuable 61.

St Joseph’s College vs Maliyadewa College

A strong batting performance from the Josephians saw them taking the upper hand on day 1 of their Group D encounter against Maliyadewa College at Kurunagala. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. Their fiery left handed opening bat Revan Kelly scored a 110 ball 91 with 9 boundaries and 1 maximum. He found good support from middle order batsman Dineth Madurawala who scored 40 runs.

The rest of the batsmen chipped in with valuable cameos which helped them to post 300 for 9 in 77 overs before they declared their innings. Gayan Chandrasena was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 24.

At stumps on day 1, Maliyadewa were 62 for 1 in 19 overs.

Dharmashoka College vs St Thomas College

Thomians hosted Dharmashoka in a Group C encounter today. The visitors won the toss and opted to bat first. Things didn’t go according to plan as wickets tumbled and they got cleaned up for just 91 runs in 31.3 overs.

Left-arm spin duo, Pavith Rathnayake and Dellon Peiris bagged 4 wickets each for the home side. Thomians came to bat in the second session. Apart from the stand out innings from Ravindu Kodithuwakku, the Thomians too struggled against some brilliant bowling by Kavindu Nadeeshan who bagged 6 for 35 for the visitors. However Kavindu’s 72 helped St Thomas’ to post 146 for their first innings which secured first innings points from the game.,

At stumps, Dharmashoka were 42 for 1 in 19 overs.

St Peter’s College vs Nalanda College

The Peterites seemed to be having a rough patch in the latter part of the third term matches as they got cleaned up for a solitary 139 in their Group A encounter against Nalanda College at Bamabalapitiya. The visitors won the toss and elected to bowl first which worked out just fine for them. Kalana Perera took a five-for for the Nalandians while Umeksha Dilshan took 4 for 29. In form all-rounder Santhush Gunathilake was yet again amongst the runs with 48 while vice-captain Manelker De Silva scored 38 runs in the middle order.

However, the Peterites showed desperation and fight with the ball in hand. Despite a fighting knock of 47 by Suhanga Wijewardane, the Nalandians were not allowed to get any easy runs. At stumps Nalanda were 118 for 7 in 52 overs, 30 runs behind the Peterite first innings total.

Zahira College vs St Benedict’s College

The Bens were in a commanding position on day 1 of their traditional match against Zahira College at Kotahena. Home side won the toss and elected to bowl first. Zahira College batsmen failed to build any big partnerships which led to their downfall. They were cleaned up for just 136 in 47.5 overs with in form batsman Sajith Sameera top scoring with 39 runs. Kaveesh Jayathileka bagged 4 for 34 for the Bens.

At stumps St Benedict’s were 102 for 5 in 39.1 overs.
