Kumar Sangakkara again showed that age is no limit as the Sri Lankan legend made an unbeaten 81 to continue his stellar run of form and ease Surrey to an eight-wicket win over Glamorgan in the domestic 50-over competition in the UK.
Having bowled Glamorgan out for 239, Surrey’s task was made all the more difficult in Cardiff when rain reduced the target to 182 from 29 overs.
Sangakkara came to the crease at 1-21 in the fourth over and was there at the end, having stroked a classy 81no from 74 balls in conjunction with the more aggressive Mark Stoneman (74 from 48) as the visitors easily proved up to the revised challenge.
Sangakkara, 39, has now played six innings across the first-class and 50-over formats for Surrey this season and has piled on 471 runs at an average of 94.2, including a pair of consecutive hundreds in the County Championship.
The left-hander passed 19,000 List A runs during the innings, becoming just the fourth batsman to reach the landmark after Graham Gooch (22,211), Graeme Hick (22,059) and Sachin Tendulkar (21,999).
Elsewhere, 23-year-old Shiv Thakor was a standout of the round, taking 3-39 and blasting 130 in Derbyshire’s win over Northamptonshire, the allrounder playing the lead hand in a run chase of 307 which was set up by South African Richard Levi’s 109.
Australian pair Adam Voges (81 for Middlesex) and Mark Cosgrove (67 for Leicestershire) made half-centuries in losing causes against Gloucestershire and Worcestershire respectively, while Kiwi Neil Wagner took 4-41 in Hampshire’s defeat to Essex at Chelmsford.
Proteas opener Dean Elgar carried on his outstanding form with an unbeaten 131 as his Somerset piled on 5-303 before reducing Sussex to 9-155 and scraping home by nine runs under the DLS method.
It was Elgar’s highest List A score and continued his run spree for Somerset, for whom he’s now posted 381 runs at 95.25 in six innings across two formats this northern summer.
