Sammu Ashan takes 6 as Ananda dominate drawn game

Sri Lanka U19 player and off-spinner Sammu Ashan picked up 6 for 32 as Ananda College took major honours in their drawn ‘group B’ encounter against Isipathana College at Colts grounds today.

After gaining a slim 3-run lead on day one, Ananda College posted 225 for 8 declared in their second innings setting up a victory target of 229 for the home team. Isipathana in their second innings lost 7 wickets for just 131 runs.

Opening batsman Sahan Suraweera and one-drop batsman Dushan Hettige made identical scores of 33 to set the perfect platform for the Anandians. Skipper Kavishka Anjula played some delightful strokes, especially some reverse-sweeps during his exciting 80-ball 61 with 9 fours and 2 sixes.

Ashel Sigera made a useful half-century off 95 balls. Sigera and Anjula added 94 runs for the 5th wicket. Left-arm spin twins, Madusshika Sandaruwan and Lahiru Dilshan captured 3 wickets apiece for Isipathana College.

Isipathana chase was anchored by opening batsman Pathum Nissanka who made 54 from 79 deliveries while skipper Sanjula Abeywickrama made 49 off 82 balls before throwing his wicket away. After being 129 for 3 at one stage, Isipathana lost four more wickets in the final hour as Sammu Ashan ended with excellent figures of 6 for 32 from 13 overs.

Earlier on day one, Ananda College was bowled out for 163 thanks to a scintillating 65 by Sahan Suraweera. Lahiru Dilshan picked up 5 for 61. Isipathana fell short by 3 runs as they were restricted to 160 as left-handed Heshan Fernando top scored with 53.
