As the business end of the Singer Cup U19 division one tournament 2016/17 is nearing, four more matches got underway today in the capital city, Colombo, Negombo and hill capital, Kandy.

Ananda College vs Trinity College

Left-handed aggressive opening batsman Sahan Suraweera smashed a brilliant century to put Ananda College in control against Trinity College in their traditional fixture at Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium.

Suraweera slammed 17 fours and 4 sixes during his magnificent batting display of 121 runs which came in just 101 deliveries. Captain Kavishka Anjula provided some late fireworks scoring 78 off 56 deliveries with 16 fours to his name. Right-arm fast bowler Trevon Percivel grabbed 4 wickets for the hosts as the Anandians posted 333 for 6 declared in 60 overs.

In reply, the Lions ended day one in a spot of bother at 61 for 5. Left-arm spinner Ashel Sigera and seamer Chamika Gunasekara grabbed two wickets apiece for the visitors.

Nalanda College vs Dharmaraja College

Kasun Sandaruwan made a scintillating ton for Nalanda College in their Group A encounter against Dharmaraja College at Dharmaraja College grounds.

Right-handed Sandaruwan occupied the crease for 161 balls to score 127 runs with 12 fours and 3 maximums while Lakshitha Rasanjana made a 99-ball 88 with 12 fours and a six. Off-spinner Gihan Witharana captured 4 wickets for the hosts but the Nalandians managed 387 for 9 wickets before declaring the innings. The Rajans were 67 for 3 at stumps.

Bandaranayake College vs Gurukula College

Gurukula College, Kelaniya grabbed major honours in their traditional encounter against Bandaranayake College, Gampaha in Kadirana.

After opting to bat first, the lads from Gampaha managed only 196 all out with Madawa Sathsara scoring a valuable half-century. In reply, Gurukula stroked 175 for 4 in 36 overs to set up a brilliant platform for a first innings win.

Zahira College vs DS Senanayake College

17 wickets fell on day one in a crucial Group C encounter between Zahira College and DS Senanayake College at Bloomfield grounds.

Thurstan College vs Nalanda College – Singer U19 Cricket Tournament 2016/17 – Day 2

Captain Sajith Sameera won the toss and elected to bat but his team did not fare well with the bat as they were bundled out for just 127. Sameera top scored with 24 while left-arm spin twins, Thathsara Bandara and Muditha Lakshan shared 5 wickets for the hosts.

DS Senanayake too struggled with the bat as they ended first day’s play on 106 for 7 in 41.3 overs with another 22 runs needed for a first innings win.
