110

Despite a horrid start to their innings S. Thomas’ College put on a decent 222 in the first innings on the back of a fine half century by Sachith Jayathilake and reduced visitors St. Sebastian’s for 103 for 3 at stumps on day one in their U-19 inter-school cricket fixture.

Host lost opener Yohan Mendis for a duck in just the second ball of their innings and had wickets falling at regular intervals but Jayathilake shared some useful partnerships with middle and lower middle order to help them reach a modest total His 54 came off in 78 balls and saw four boundaries and three sixes. Rashmika Opatha, the opener was the second highest scorer with a patient 42 off 58 balls. He also hit seven boundaries.

Lahiru Heshan stared with the ball claiming four for 63 runs in his 18 over spell while Sangeeth Cooray picked up two for 44.

In their response St. Sebatian’s had their first wicket falling at 3 but 82 runs for the second wicket between Luke Jayadeva and Avishka Fernando helped them to make a impressive recovery. Jayadeva scored a run-a-ball 61 with eight boundaries and two sixes.
