Rumesh Tharanga, who smashed the men’s javelin throw national record about a couple of weeks ago, secured the Asian gold medal by clearing a distance of 82.05 metres. The best throw of the young spearman came in his third attempt. But he had to stop way behind his magical throw of 86.50 metres (National Record), as unfortunately the final three throws were judged as foul throws. Despite that, the aircraftman from the Sri Lanka Air Force did enough to secure the first place to hand over some glory to the motherland.

Further, the experienced woman athlete Nadeesha Dilhani Lekamge also secured a silver medal at the women’s javelin throw event with a throw of 57.53 metres. The veteran athlete managed to finish her performance without any foul throws, and her best distance came in her third attempt. At present Nadeesha works as a Warrant Officer I who is attached to the 2 (V) Battalion Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps, and she holds the national record with a throw of 61.57 metres at the 2023 Asian Games, Hangzhou.
