Royal thump St.Joseph’s after 6 years; Embuldeniya takes 11

Left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya took a five-wicket haul for the second consecutive day as he bowled Royal College to a famous 8-wicket win over St. Joseph’s College on Satuday at Reid Avenue.

This was a tournament match played in the ‘Singer’ under 19 division one tournament 2015/16 while this is the 119th annual fixture between these two prestigious schools.

Lasith Embuldeniya captured 6 wickets in the first-innings as he rattled St. Joseph’s to only 131 on Friday. Royalists declared their innings from their overnight score of 226 for 8 with a lead of 95.

The visitors struggled to put away the Royal spin attack as they succumbed to only 186 in their second innings. Embuldeniya took five wickets for the hosts’ while off-spinner Ganith Sandeepa took three. Embuldeniya has now taken 78 wickets so far this season.

Opener Revan Kelly and middle-order batsman Dineth Madurawela scored 46 and 40 for Joes respectively. Left-hander Naveen Vidanapathirana’s cracking 55 guided the Royal chase of just 92 runs.

St. Benedict’s College vs De Mazenod College

St. Benedict’s College recorded a convincing 10-wicket victory over De Mazenod College in their annual cricket fixture played at Kandana.

Fast-bowler Geethal Fernando and Madushan Kularathne took 6 wickets apiece in both innings as the De Mazenod batsmen struggled to find form on both occasions.

S. Thomas’ College had to be satisfied only with first-innings points against Ananda College in their annual cricket encounter played at Mount Lavinia.

The visitors were 55 for 2 overnight and they were bowled out for just 142 in the opening session on day 2. Seamer Shenal De Silva and chinaman Ravindu Tillakarathne picked up 3 wickets apiece.

An exciting nail-biting match ended in a draw at Wijerama Mawatha with the hosts’ gaining a slight first-innings win.

The Cambrians were 87 for 2 overnight in their chase of 168 but they fell short by one run. Off-spinner Savindu Peiris took four wickets as the hosts’ crumbled to 84 in their second innings giving a target of 85 for the visitors but they were 68 for 8 at close of play.
