The annual All Island Hockey Under 20 Championship which is organised by the Sri Lanka Sports Ministry together with the Education Ministry started off today at the Astro turf. In this year’s competition there will be more than 25 girls and boys teams participating and matches will be played on knock-out basis.

The first match in the boys’ category for the day was between Royal College and Mahinda Vidayalaya Galle. From the start of the match the Royalists took control of the game as they were more comfortable with the ground conditions. Mahinda focused on a more defensive game as it was difficult to get through the Royal defence. This made it  easy for the Royal attackers to implement their strategies without much pressure. The final score showed 4-1 in favour of Royal College.

In the following match, Richmond College recorded an excellent victory against Hindu College in the first round. Hindu College was unable handle the pressure from the opponents as Richmond dominated the game from the start. However, the final score read as 6-0 which made D.S. Senanayake the winners.

Holy Family Convent Wennappuwa was able to record an easy win against Southland Girls College Galle in the girls’ category of the tournament. It was a one sided throughout the match and Holy family through  good coordination and excellent offensive strategies were able to register their victory by scoring 7 goals. In the next match Seethadevi Girls College Kandy scored 8 goals to Sangamitha Girls School Galle and qualified for the next round.

Final round matches will be played tomorrow at the Astro turf.
