Royal batsmen save game from the jaws of defeat

Royal College took on St Peter’s College in a close inter school cricket match which took place at Bambalapitiya this evening.

St. Peter’s College in their first innings managed to score 211 runs in 58.3 overs with Shasheen Fernando scoring a half century inclusive of four fours and 1 six. Lahiru Milantha and Julian De Zilva supported their team by scoring 44 and 36 runs respectively.

Devind Pathmanathan, chipped in with 3 wickets for 31 runs while Anupa Thilakarathne, Poorna Aluthge and Chamika Karunarathne ended with 2 wickets each for 27, 46 and 56 runs respectively.

Royal College managed to end their first innings on 253 for 8 from 59.4 overs with Shaminda Dias and Isuru Gunathilake notching up half centuries scoring 66 and 50 runs respectively. Shashen Ramanayake and Milan Abhesekara were able to get 46 and 29 runs in their first innings.

Dushan Hemantha and Janith Liyanage with their aggressive bowling chipped in with 3 and 2 wickets, in that order.

St. Peter’s in their 2nd inning managed to get 218 for 7 wickets, thanks to their batters who scored with a lot of intent managing to score within 51 overs. Lahiru Milantha one of the best batsmen in the St. Peter’s College team scored a century inclusive of seven fours and four sixes which came off 123 balls. Dushan Hemantha and Jason Bultjenz supported Lahiru by scoring 38 and 25 runs respectively. Right arm off spinner Poorna Aluthgeended his bowling spell capturing 4 wickets for 50 runs.

The Peterites with a superlative batting performance managed to set a target of 177 runs, however the hosts could only manage 112 for 9 in 70overs. Isuru Gunathilake, Ronaka Ahangama and Hashen Ramanayake scored 31, 20 and 18 respectively but were unable to reach their target. The visitors were looking solid when Julian De Zilva and Chemila Obesekare blazed the Royalist’s with 2 and 3 wickets respectively. 

It was a commendable performance by St. Peter’s College who dominated with both bat and ball, and Royal College who were looking good in the first innings could not cope up with the tight bowling of St. Peter’s. 

The match was ended in a no decision.
