Promising 22-year old fast bowling all-rounder Chamika Karunarathne has been cleared to resume bowling after he underwent an Illegal Bowling Action Test at Sri Ramachandra University in Chennai last month.

Karunarathne was reported for a suspect bowling action during the SLC Super Provincial Tournament 2018 match between Kandy and Galle in Hambanthota in April by the on-field umpires, Gamini Dissanayake and Deepal Gunawardene.

Karunarathne captured 5 for 63 in a lively spell on a flat deck to trouble the likes of Upul Tharanga, Roshen Silva, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Dasun Shanaka.

Following the report by the umpires, Karunarathne was unable to play the SLC Super Provincial limited-overs tournament.

He was assisted by fast-bowling coach Chamila Gamage during the bowling action Test held on 16th May at the ICC accredited center.

After the assessment, Karunarathne’s bowling action has been deemed within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations.

According to reliable sources, Karunarathne who toured with the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team for the West Indies tour last year, has been left out of the preliminary squad for the upcoming ‘A’ team tour of Bangladesh later this month.

Former Royal College and Sri Lanka U19 captain Karunarathne represents NCC and has taken 54 first-class wickets and averages 21 with the bat in 25 games.
