The rivalries return to the fairways this January next year as the Ceylon Golf League (CGL), Sri Lanka’s first franchise golf league, announced its second season, with Nations Trust Bank joining as title partner and more than 150 players already registered.

Taking place from January 8 to 10, 2027 at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC), the CGL Season 2 will bring eight city-based franchises back into competition. Reigning champions Nuwara Eliya Panthers will defend their title, while runners-up Trinco Sharks and the rest of the field prepare for another shot at the trophy.

The announcement came at the league’s Season 2 press conference earlier this week at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, following an inaugural edition that brought together 130 players and more than 2,600 attendees. CGL introduced a franchise team competition to Sri Lankan golf, combining a live player auction with city rivalries and three days of competitive play.

With over 150 players registered and 35 players released across the eight franchises, the player auction on October 23 at The Atrium, Cinnamon Grand will give teams the opportunity to reshape their squads ahead of January. Every selection will count as the franchises build their challenge for the Season 2 title.

“The first season showed us how much appetite there is for franchise golf in Sri Lanka. Players embraced the team competition, the rivalries came alive, and we now have a foundation to build on,” said Shamal Perera, Co-Founder of Ceylon Golf League.

“Together with my partners Mahela Jayawardena and Suhayb Sangani, we’re excited to bring CGL back for its second season. Having Nations Trust Bank join us as title partner, alongside our other partners, gives us real momentum as we look ahead to the auction and another competitive three days at RCGC.”

Nations Trust Bank leads the Season 2 partner line-up as title partner, alongside Mastercard as event partner, M Power as official financial partner and KIA as official automobile partner. ThePapare joins as official broadcast partner, with Hutch as official telecommunications partner and E FM as official radio partner. The league also welcomes Cinnamon Grand as official hospitality partner and Alankara Jewellery as official jewellery partner.

The competition retains its three-day format, opening with Foursomes on January 8, followed by Fourball on January 9, and concluding with Indies in a one-versus-three format on January 10. Teams will compete across seven handicap categories, encompassing male and female divisions. With the title holders returning, challengers preparing and the auction approaching, the race for the second Ceylon Golf League crown is underway.
