Rangana Herath to captain Sri Lanka in Zimbabwe

Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath has been appointed as the acting Sri Lanka Test captain for the Zimbabwe Tests due to an injury to Angelo Mathews.

Herath will become Sri Lanka’s 14th Test captain since Sri Lanka gaining Test status in 1981. He has never led Sri Lanka in any format before. Mathews aggravated his previous calf injury during training on Saturday and failed the fitness Test. Scans showed a minor niggle on his calf which ruled him out of the Australia series recently.

The appointed vice-captain, Dinesh Chandimal was also ruled out of the Zimbabwe Test series due to a thumb injury which he sustained during a mercantile match in September.

The replacement for Mathews would be left-handed batsman Upul Tharanga.
