The Sri Lanka Rugby Players Association (SLRPA) was formed at the inaugural AGM, which was held on 22nd May at the Sri Lanka Olympic House, Colombo. The main objective of the association is to work on the Rugby players’ welfare and support to build their future careers.
Further, the Royalist and former CR & FC and Sri Lanka Flanker Pavithra Fernando was appointed as the Charter President. The veteran Sri Lankan player, who got vast experience in Club Rugby, captained the Tuskers at the Asian Rugby Tourney in Dubai in 2008.
For the General Secretary position, the Thomian and former Havelocks, CH & FC and Sri Lanka number 08 & flanker Sudarshan Muthutantri was appointed. He has captained the Sri Lanka national side in both Rugby 7s and XV formats. Furthermore, in recent years, Sudarshana Muthuthanthri engaged in the oval-shaped ball game as a sports promoter.
According to charter President Pavithra Fernando, the association has numerous plans to support players. Basically they will stand as a supporting group for the players against injustices that they are facing. At present, Rugby players have a lot of problems during their playing career, as well as after they have decided to hang up their boots. As the players have committed full-time to excel in Rugby, they did not have a clear plan to build the rest of their lives. In addition, the association will help to get into contractual obligations and support to maintain the mental welfare of the players, which was an area of concern over the years. Most importantly, they will work on building connections to obtain opportunities for local players to represent foreign Rugby clubs.
Furthermore, Pavithra Fernando highlighted the pathetic situation that Sri Lankan players and coaches are facing as they render their service targeting the Asian Rugby Championship without pay. He emphasized that it is hard to challenge the strong nations in Asia by maintaining the semi-professional structure of Rugby.
