Sri Lanka vs Pakistan - 2nd Test - Day 5

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 246 runs on the fifth and final day of the 2nd Test match to level the 2-match series, 1-1 in Galle.

Reporting from Galle

After losing the first Test match by 4 wickets, the hosts came back strongly to beat the visitors with a stellar performance. The spin duo – Prabath Jayasuriya and Ramesh Mendis shared 17 wickets between them in the match.

Left-arm orthodox spinner, Jayasuriya was the pick of the bowlers in the second innings, taking his fourth five-wicket haul in only his sixth innings in Test cricket. Right-arm off spinner, Mendis, who took five wickets in the first innings, ended up with 4 wickets to complete a 9-wicket match bag.

Resuming the final day on 89 for 1, Pakistan lost well-set Imam ul-Haq for 49 as the left-hander was caught behind by keeper Niroshan Dickwella off Mendis.

Skipper Babar Azam and wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan added 79 runs for the third wicket giving some hopes for the visitors of ensuring a draw. However, against the run of play, Rizwan left a straight one and was bowled by Jayasuriya to trigger Pakistan’s collapse.

Fawad Alam ran himself out, trying to sneak in a quick single and then Kusal Mendis anticipated quickly, moved to his right to take a superb catch at short leg to dismiss Salman Agha. Pakistan lost three of their middle-order batters within 30 minutes before lunch.

In the post-lunch session, after surviving a close LBW call and being dropped at first slip, Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s luck ran out when Jayasuriya trapped him plumb in front for 81 with a straight one.

After losing Babar, the Pakistan tail did not last long as they tried to hit their way out of trouble, giving up their wickets quickly as Sri Lanka completed the win with more than a session to spare.
