The Athletics Association of Sri Lanka said in a statement that the Under-18 girls’ 2000 metres steeplechase which was omitted from the list of competitions at the recently held Junior Nationals Athletics Championships will be held at the forthcoming National selections trials on May 17.
The omission of the event sparked uproar as several athletes from Ratnayake Central, Walala had come to compete at the Junior Nationals with the hope of qualifying for the Youth Olympics trials.
The AASL said that the Under-18 Girls 2000m steeplechase will be held as the first event of the National trial which will commence on May 17. The statement said that it is a possible discipline from which athletes could be selected for the Youth Olympic Trials which will be held in Bangkok on may 21-22.
However, the team for the Youth Olympics Trials had been already selected. When inquired on this regard G.L.S. Perera the media spokesman of the AASL said that there is room for late entires.
