No ground but a Cup

With just eight years in existence and not even a ground to play on, an Old Boys team from CWW Kannangara College became a champion as they snatched a dramatic 24-22 win over the Navy team in the final of the Western Province rugby Sevens at Longden Place in Colombo.

The Navy camp in the grandstand began their celebrations even before the match could end, but the most unimaginable happened when Kannangara ran down a match-winning try in the dying seconds of the match that originated from their own half.

The honours fell on 17-year old Madawa Sathsara as he touched down under the post for his second try and a simple conversion after they trailed 17-22 with the end of the match already sounded from the recorder’s desk.

Kannangara with only a coach, Asela Nuwan, on the bench showed that nothing was impossible if the spirit was alive and big names or forces did not matter.

The Old Kannangara team entered the tournament by practicing on a hard rocky ground inside their school at Borella and the event’s organizer the prestigious Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) could not have wished for a better climax.

Old Kannangara carried away the Asian Finance Trophy presented by its CEO Lakmali Wickremasuriya.

Petersons won the Shield, Millennium IT won the Bowl and Kotalawela Defence Academy took the Plate in the 16-team tournament.
