The Athletics Championship of the 35th National Youth Sports Festival was concluded successfully at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium, Diyagama, during the last weekend. The event was organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports with the collaboration of the National Youth Services Council. After a series of exhilarating track and field events, Gampaha District athletes secured the championships with 65 points.
Urban Youth (38 points) and Kalutara (25) Districts won the 1st and 2nd runners-up positions, respectively, while Kurunegala and Colombo Districts shared the fourth place with 22 points each. In total 26 districts were in the fray for the glory during the extravagant athletics event.

The Best Men’s Athlete award went to A. A. Pasindu Malshan of Gampaha District for finishing the triple jump by shattering the meet record with a magnificent leap of 16.11 m. Further, Sayuri Lakshima, also from Gampaha District, emerged as the Best Women’s Athlete with a new meet record in the 400 m event by clocking 54.12 seconds. The best male and female athletes were presented with two brand new YAMAHA motorcycles, displaying the unwavering commitment of Associated Motorways (Private) Limited to uplift Sri Lankan sports. There was no wonder about the awards, as the same duo emerged as the “Best Male and Female Athletes” at the 49th National Sports Festival 2025 (senior) a few months ago.
Apart from the above, Shivakumar Piragasraj, Isuru Lakshan, Jithma Shenali and Nethmika Madhushani showcased some unmatched talents while establishing new meet records. Further, the Gampaha District team, comprised of Rashini Shehara Karunarathne, Jithma Shenali, Shalini Dilhara Nethmini, and Sayuri Lakshima Mendis, won the women’s 4x400m relay by a huge margin, setting another new meet record.
During the most eye-catching event, the 100m, Pasindu Sadaruwan Silva & D. Frenando of Gampaha District emerged as the fastest man and woman among all the youth athletes.
