Here’s a brief look into a few matches which took place today in the Singer U19 Division I cricket tournament.

St. Peter’s College VS Trinity College

This group A encounter kicked off at Asgiriya stadium today. The Peterites have looked good so far in the season. Peter’s won the toss and elected to bat first. Santhush Gunathilaka batted well in the top order for the Peterites but it was skipper Lakshina Rodrigo who was yet again the hero with the bat. He thoroughly deserved a century but unfortunately lost his wicket when he was on 91. The Peterites were bowled out for 219 in 79.2 overs with Vimukthi Nethmal taking 4 for 68 for the lions. At stumps on day 1, Trinity College was 53 for 2 in 16 overs.

The Josephians put up a good batting display against Mahinda College in their traditional match at Darley Road today. Nipun Sumanasinghe’s 82 in the top order guided the home side to 255 for 7 in 82 overs after which they declared their innings. At stumps on day 1, Mahinda College was 7 for no loss in 11 overs.

Group C encounter between these two sides kicked off today at Zahira College grounds. The home side won the toss and elected to bat first. Mohommad Shamas scored a brilliant 88 to help his side post 241 runs all out in 75.5 overs. Mohommad Madhi played a valuable cameo of 31 while Kavindu Nadishan managed to take 6 for 70 for the visitors. At stumps on Day 1, Dharmashoka College was 26 for the loss of 1 wicket in 7 overs.

Maheesh Theekshana’s five wickets helped Bens to take early advantage in their Group B encounter against Wesley College. Bens won the toss and elected to ball first. Wesley could not build any partnerships as Maheesh rattled through the Wesley batting line up. Thisuraka Akmeena top scored for Wesley with 34 as they were cleaned up for just 154 in 55.2 overs. Maheesh ended with figures 5 for 38. In reply, Bens were cruising at 85 for 1 in 25 overs.

The Sebs took honours on the first day of their traditional encounter against DS. DSS was asked to bat fist but they could only manage a solitary 121 in 32.4 overs. Muditha Lakshan top scored with a valuable 38 but the highlight of the day was the Sebastian bowling attack. Nimesh Bandara bagged 3 wickets while Vishen and Pasith bagged 2 wickets each.

When bad light brought day’s play to a premature end, St. Sebastian’s were looking good on 73 for 2 in 25 overs.

Deshan Gunasinghe’s 116 guided Rajan’s to a formidable first innings total of 283 after they elected to bat first in their group A clash against St Anthony’s College, Wattala. Deshan got good support from Kasun Gunawardane who scored a valuable 82 for the Rajan’s. Kaveesha Dulanjana bagged 3 for 31 for the Anthonians. At stumps, St Anthony’s were 38 for 1 in 16 overs.

De Mazenod College took on President’s College in their group D match at their home grounds today. Visitors won the toss and elected to bat first and they managed to post 263 in 70.4 overs. Hashan Priyadarshana top scored with 99 while Mohommad Rifaz scored a valuable half century. Hashen Fernando bagged 4 for 27 for the home side. De Mazenod came onto bat in the last session of Day 1 and they were in a spot of bother at stumps with only 64 on board for the loss of 4 wickets.
